Old Firm Shirts drop kids beer logo

Posted on April 11th, 2008 in Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers by zebra10

Carling, sponsors of Rangers and Celtic, is set to remove their logo from the Old Firm kids shirts. This move comes 2 years ahead of an agreed ban to remove the branding of alcohol on child-size replica shirts. Coors, the company which brews Carling has said that this is the best way to control alcohol advertising as alcohol and football do not mix with each other, as footballers do not drink alcohol during or before the game yet during the game they wear shirts showing alcohol adverts on them.

Coors Chief Executive Officer Mark Hunter said that this was a step forward to encourage responsible drinking although he did not agree that this move would discourage underage drinking.

“It’s part of a much bigger plane that the whole alcohol industry is stepping up to.”

The Portman Group’s fourth Code of Practice recommends that alcohol sponsorship is removed from children’s replica football shirts from summer 2010. Therefore more alcohol related logos will be removed from child-size replica kits during the next two years.
