Nike extend South Korea deal to 2011

Nike extended their contract with the Korean Football Association, when they signed a $27 million deal for the rights to supply the national football team’s kit in a four-year deal. adidas offered a more lucrative deal however, Korean football officials were reluctant to sign with the German company, as they were worried that Nike may well pursue legal action against them over sponsorship contract violation.

Under this new contract, which begins next year, Nike will also provide other sporting products to the Korean team and allow national team players to use boots from other brands. Previously, the Korean football Association had agreed with Nike on a blackout option, which meant that national team players had to remove the logos on their boots if they were not Nike products. In the past five years, it is thought there had been over a hundred violations of this clause, which incurred the Korean team fines of approximately $1 million.
