We said it could be happening and it is now, Canterbury the world’s leading rugby brand are going to make Portsmouth’s football shirts for the 2007/08 season taking over from current kit manufacturer for the Premier League club Jako.
Canterbury will produce the first team kit, training & bench wear as well as fan’s off field clothes for the south coast club, they will combine their BaseLayer product with the shirts giving football it’s first layered kit.
Canterbury better known for rugby shirts
Canterbury already produce rugby kits for Heineken Cup winners London Wasps and international teams Australia, Ireland, South Africa, Scotland & Japan. They will be supplying those five international Rugby Unions with shirts for the IRB 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
The New Zealand based company were established in 1904, and since then they have made sports kit for the New Zealand, South African and Australian national rugby union sides and the 1995 New Zealand America’s Cup sailing team.

The move into football marks an exciting time for the Canterbury brand as well as an excellent opportunity to showcase the expertise of the company to a new audience. Chief Executive of Portsmouth FC, Peter Storrie said:
“At a time when the ambitions and development of Portsmouth FC are growing on the pitch, it is essential that we look to commercial partners who mirror our aspirations. Canterbury’s global presence as well as their innovative and fresh thinking approach to kit manufacturing will help the club to develop both on and off the field.
“The kit that Canterbury is providing the club will be the most technically advanced in the Premiership, and the first ever to include a layered system combining Canterbury’s BaseLayer technology with our football shirts. This coupled with the commercial advantages of Canterbury providing a bespoke fashion range for the fans means the partnership is an exciting prospect that everyone at the club is looking forward to.”

I think this is a huge step forward. Not only do Canterbuy design some of the best made sports apparel in the world, their leisure wear is fantastic as well.
I can’t wait for the shirt to be released.
As long as our players don’t intend to start vomit drinking and mini bus rocking and all the usual ruby stuff. I for one will not be wearing the shirt and jeans, club blazer and tie combo all those rugger types love. You know the one they wear with those brown shoes with the laces round the side……….
