Michael Owen presented as Man Utd’s new Number 7

Posted on July 13th, 2009 in Manchester United by reddevilrooney

On Monday, the three summer acquisitions of Sir Alex Ferguson were presented to the fans worldwide and the media. They answered questions posed to them by different journalists, and were praised by their new manager for their skills and qualities. Sir Alex also stated that Owen, Obertan and Valencia are likely to be the only signings this summer, as player prices have become too inflated. The signing of Owen drew the most attention from the media, as he is a former Liverpool player, but who also played for Real Madrid and Newcastle before moving to Old Trafford.

Now, the news has emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has assigned Michael Owen the number 7 shirt at Manchester United for 2009/10. Owen will occupy the iconic number worn by George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and most recently the departed Cristiano Ronaldo. This move signals that Michael Owen is not the injury-prone worn-out player that the media and anti-Owen critics are making him look like. Wearing the shirt number at United shows that Owen can, and will, bring something new and of a high standard to the team. Although shirt sales are well below the expected level, now that the number that Owen will wear is known, fans are expected to buy his shirts in bigger quantities. More shirts are expected to be purchased once the season gets under way and Owen starts scoring goals. If he finds his best form, we may have another top scorer wearing the 7 shirt at United.

Michael Owen

“I’m hungry to do well here. If this challenge doesn’t put a spring in your step and a smile on your face then nothing will. I still believe I can do well at a top team like Manchester United.”

“If there’s one thing that probably angers me a little it’s that. There’s no doubt I’ve had injuries in my career, but most people have. You continually read that over the last two years I’ve been plagued with injuries: it’s just not true.”

“I think I played 33 games and then 32 games in the last two years. Newcastle weren’t in Europe, we didn’t have any long cup runs… there are only 38 games in a Premier League season, so playing 33 one year and 32 in the other isn’t too bad.”

“The two years previous I had a few injuries but it was nothing to do with being injury-prone. If somebody jumps on your foot and you break your metatarsal [you can't do much about that].”

“I’m 29 and I’ve played more than 500 games for club and country, so that says it all. I might pick up an injury here or there but that’s the rigours of the modern game. I don’t believe I’m injury-prone.”

He just wanted to win a league title so he came to us…I thought they would give him 10 and put a legend at 7 like Rooney.

  4. Anom said,

How can he be a traitor? If you liverpool “supporters” love him that much, why did you sell him? You neva gave a toss about him since he left, now you worship an overated spanish ******

  5. JackM16 said,

If Owen had gone back to Liverpool then their fans would’ve been worshipping him and saying ‘he’ll be back to his best, watch him fire us to the title’. But now he’s at United, their all saying ‘big deal, he’s **** now anyway’.

balls that is… Rooney is Old Trafford great already, but he earned number 10 and should keep it for good.

Owen is the biggest name signed and should take the 7 shirt, he will do well this season.

im a liverpool fan and yeah he signed for man united but he had no choice i thinkany1 in his position would sign for the english champions over stoke n hull city he held out for liverpool they never come so he signed for a club who have been sucess to boast his chances of world cup so fairplay to the bloke however liverpool wil win title x

  13. brn442 said,

Sorry but I can’t exactly see them flying off the shelves. Again, Owen left Liverpool because for most of the 90’s they were going nowhere fast, especially in Europe, and as a Liverpool supporter I don’t blame him. Rafa could’ve re-signed him but he passed, so best of luck to him.

brn442- way to be a man about it, as a united supporter im excited about owen putting on the red of united, but number 7 not so sure……yet. i personally feel it should have gone to Obertan as i believe united will make him the next Zidane. i don’t think valencia will be all that great, more like a wing version of Park. Yea he is good and possibly the best of his country but South Korea/Ecuador are not brazil

  19. Matt said,

Seriously though, Owen deserves the 7 shirt, he is already a legend. Ronaldo got no.7 straight away when he was practically unknown.

  20. Man utd 4 eva said,

to be fair he owed it to newcastle … injury after injury , he should of stayed on if he had cared for the shirt he was wearing not the money… anyway thats owen for you, always thinknig about the pound… doesnt both us man utd have endless cash

    owen is a ***** traitor
united will dont deserve a traitor…=.=

  23. Howie said,

FAO Anom – We sold Owen because we had to, he deliberatley ran his contract down to get a bigger signing on fee at Madrid. He would have gone on a free a year later had we not sold him that year as he wasnt interested in signing a new contract.
He has never nor will be regarded as a ‘Liverpool legend’ the only thing he did at Liverpool worthy of any mention ws the 2 goals against Arsenal in the FA Cup final in 2001. He will never be thought of as highly at Anfield as Dalgleish or Gerrard & rightly so.
However its a shrewd signing from Ferguson, given good service he will score goals & thats good for England because we need a goalscorer. But Liverpool fans never wanted him back after he stabbed us in the back to go to Madrid.

  24. Andreina said,

Howie you’re right… I hope Xabi won’t do us the same thing! =’(

  25. utd8 said,

lmao look how you are all hoping your best players dont come to their senses, i thinks its all a bit pathetic that theres such a fuss over owen, he doesnt owe fuckall to newcastle, they knew the risks of paying him that salary when they signed him, he said it himself about the so called injury prone, playing 32 and 33 games or so in the last 2 seasons, english chapions to the championship, who wouldnt leave and if he is so money orientated, he is recieiving far less than he did at newcastle at man utd, so why has he left lol, and if owen isnt a legend, then how come there are so many liverpool fans so bothered about this transfer, you dont see us man utd fans hating the guts of silvestre, just because he has gone to arsenal, i think its about time liverpool fans grew up and concentrated on what faults they have in their own team other than right and wrong transfer decisions of other teams

  26. Howie said,

Me too, Alonsos the best player we’ve got, we wont win the league without him!

  27. Miko said,

Alonso is the best player we’ve got? You mad?

I don’t know why any scousers care about Owen joining, UTD replaced Tevez and Ronaldo with Obertan, Valencia and Owen… not much to worry about there.

He is a traitor though, anyone who denies that is an idiot.
