Michael Owen new Man Utd shirts on Pre-order

Posted on July 5th, 2009 in Manchester United by reddevilrooney

The transfer of Michael Owen to Manchester United is surely one of the most shocking transfers of this summer. In a summer dominated by crazy spending by Real Madrid, Manchester United stole the sports pages with an unpredictable transfer, and interestingly, not spending a single pound of the £80 million they received from the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer. The Red Devils have already strengthened the wing with the acquisition of Antonio Valencia from Wigan, and the Michael Owen transfer is the second signing of the summer.

The Old Trafford club was (…and still is!) linked with every imaginable superstar striker to replace the departed Carlos Tevez, but the witty Scottish manager opted for an ex-Liverpool frontman to fill the void left by the Argentine. Initial reactions were not very positive, but as the transfer was officially announced, most fans, or rather the real fans who support Fergie’s decisions, praised this transfer as a win-win situation for both parties. It is unlikely that the striking force of the Red Devils will be composed only of Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck and Macheda next season, and Fergie is linked with a bigger swoop for another striker, having lost out on top-priority Karim Benzema to crazy-spending Madrid. A new name crops up every day in the tabloids, so it is useless mentioning any of the rumours.

Michael Owen’s career move to Newcastle was not good at all, as it earned him the reputation for being worn out and injury-prone. However, if Sir Alex believes in this lad to provide the goals that Tevez would have provided, who are the fans to doubt his judgment? Another criticism was that United would be getting a Liverpool man into their squad. Only 4 players have played for both clubs in the history of football. Despite this, the transfer is not direct from Liverpool to Man Utd. Owen spent time at Real Madrid and Newcastle before moving on a free to United. Owen is determined to prove that he is worthy of a first-team place in a major club, as a place in the England squad for the 2010 World Cup is up for grabs, and a club partnership with Rooney is ideal to convince Fabio Capello that Owen is the right man for the job. For England, Owen had played 89 times, scoring an astonishing return of 40 goals, among which are hattricks against Germany (2002 World Cup qualification) and Colombia (friendly). He is best known for his goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

It is yet unknown which shirt number will be worn by Michael Owen for the upcoming season. The striker may be given a vacant number or we might have some number changes when Sir Alex submits the squad numbers. The shirts of Michael Owen have already been placed on pre-order at the Man Utd Megastore, and will be delivered on the 16th July, by which time the number should be known. Shirts are selling at £55.94, and should be very much in demand especially if the Englishman gets on a very good start to the campaign.

I support Arsenal but Owen must be the biggest trater of all time.

He grew up supporting Everton and then signed for Liverpool

He left Liverpool as he wanted to ‘win trophies’ so he went to Madrid.

And then aged 29 he goes and joins Manchester Utd!

u lot do realise its football and NOT a defection to Russia with national secrets.lol

@ Liam JC: He was born in Chester, near Manchester, as well.

Im happy with the signing, but I’ll be getting Berbatov on the back of mine.

iv got to laugh, owen left us sayin he wanted to win trophies, the season he left we won the champions league, he did nothing at madrid and then joined newcastle. i dont think he went to newcastle to win trophies!! now hes at united he might make berbatov look good. i personally cant wait to ‘welcome’ him back to anfield when we play the mancs!!

Traitor? When are you going to realize that this is a business. Benitez had a chance to sign Owen twice and passed, does that mean Liverpool betrayed him? Ferguson got a world class striker on a free transfer – IF ONLY HE CAN STAY FIT FOR MORE THAN 5 MATCHES. Wouldn’t Alex love it if Owen’s goals gave united the 19th title.

    ” aroles said,

Chester is nowhere near Manchester, mate! It’s 15 miles away from Liverpool and 33 miles away from Manchester.

Not that it matters where Owen was born. He grew up supporting Everton, just like Liverpool stars Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush etc (do any Liverpool players actually support the side?).

We now have two boyhood Evertonians playing up front at United, not that it matters.

  12. tigerpete said,

Owen to become number 25. Hope he gets injured and does rubbish – could have at least had the decency to talk to other Premier League clubs, such as Villa, Hull City or Stoke. Fergie has took a huge risk, no matter what anyone says

    UNITED TILL I DIE

  19. wei said,

    Which number will he wear?

Hope he won’t ask number 10 from Roo and Roo won’t become the new number 7.

Roo + Berba + Owen is enough for our United. Bring more offensive defenders instead!!

  20. Ceaser007 said,

God some of you people are stupid! Who cares if he supports Everton, played for Liverpool and has now signed for United? it’s only a game.People should give the guy a break he’s never done anything bad to anyone unlike Joey Barton for example, who is a violent little thug, and recieves hardly any criticism any more. I would love to see Owen do well for himself if it meant some of you lot would have to eat your words.

  21. JackM15 said,

Neither Owen or Valencia will get the no. 7 shirt, if we signed someone like aguero then he might have a chance of getting the no.7. If Nani leaves then valencia will get no. 17 and owen will get a random no. like 29 or something lol

  22. JackM15 said,

As for Owen being a traitor, as England fans (probably) you should be happy that Owen has a chance to ressurect his career and if Fergie can get him fit and inspire him to start scoring regularly again, then Owen could be Englands secret weapon at the world cup. Besides, who blames him for leaving Liverpool? Its not as if he was ever gonna win the title there was it!

  23. mel said,

i think it’s great he’s signed for united as i am a fan of united but all you liverpool supporters need to grow up he left liverpool fc years ago i could understand if he had come from liverpool fc but he hasn’t he come from newcastle fc and if rafa wanted him he should have been quicker to sign him

  24. mel said,

i reckon owen will get number 14 and give tosic something else

  25. mel said,

i think he will get number 14 shirt and give tosic something else

tigerpete: “could have at least had the decency to talk to other Premier League clubs, such as Villa, Hull City or Stoke”

What are you going on about?! Why should he have to talk to any team, he’s got no obligation to. Reckon its a good move all-round.

  27. Dan said,

talking bout numbers, i think one will get 27, as it is free, tigerpete, 25 is worn by simpson, and i dont think he will be moved. personally i hope owen gets 27, and valencia gets 32 or something like that

  28. aaron parker said,

  35. azman said,

being a liverpool fan i watched owen when he left us for madrid i thought he did brilliant the short space of time he was there then when he went to newcastle that was the ruin of him. I for one am glad he has gone to a big club although i say it through gritted teeth its gotta be good for england next near if he can stay injury free as long as he dosent do us over at anfield good luck michael !

  36. GSW said,

inside im crushed owen has gone to united, but at least he should start scoring again which ultimately will benefit the national side, who will have no choice but to pick him for the world cup, he’s our most natural goalscorer. i hope he gets a decent number like 7

  37. fazza said,

azman and GSW, i’m glad at least some people had something sensible to say… as a man utd fan for 19 yrs i say this in the upmost respect, owen is an awesome signing for us as long as he can stay fit which in turn will make an obvious partnership in the england squad in rooney and owen… if ya look at owen’s goalscoring record its a goal evry 1.7 games so who dares question him? i’d like 2 c all the idiotic fans calling him a traitor have a record like that at liverpool, real and newcastle. Fairplay 2 ya azman and GSW for backing him… afterall although we love it dearly… it is jst a game. as for a squad number… i’d say he’ll probably have 2 chose out of the vacant 1’s, rumoured valencia is gonna b 7 so maybe 27… other option is maybe sum1 like anderson changing?? doubtful berba will giv up 9 and roo wont giv up 10 so we’ll av 2 wait and c wot fergie decides on that 1…

  38. tom said,

    owen is number 7

  39. Dan said,

yeah, owen is number 7, i would like to know what number Valencia, Obertan and Diouf are.
More to the point I for one am happy at the signing, he can stay fit at Man U, and if he does get injured then he has one of te best fitness teams in the premier league, or maybe even world club football, but just leave him alone, he is a great player, a world class striker, and he is close to being Englands top scorer.
