Man Utd open talks with potential 2009/10 shirt sponsor

Posted on June 1st, 2009 in Manchester United by reddevilrooney

After the deal with AIG was put into doubt, and the insurance company announced it would not be renewing the deal, Man Utd had started the search for a new sponsor that would step in if the situation got worse. Several Asian companies have been touted as potential sponsors, but it seems that the Red Devils will opt for another American insurance company rather than go for an Indian or Saudi sponsorship. The situation of AIG has reportedly got worse, and it seems that the club will be announcing that the deal will be terminated earlier due to unforeseen circumstances.

The present deal runs until the end of the 2009/10 season, which would see AIG sponsoring the playing strips of the club for the coming season. However, according to the Sunday Mirror, this will not happen. According to the newspaper, Man utd are in advanced talks with AON, an American insurance giant, over a new agreement which would bag the club over £20 million per season. Reports are saying that such deal will be announced during pre-season, and everything would be in place to issue the new chevron shirt with the AON logo on it. An insider is quoted as saying:

“Talks have gone well and it’s 90 per cent certain that Aon will be United’s new shirt sponsor.”
“Whether it happens next season or the year after is yet to be decided.”
