Hull need to present 3rd kit

Posted on January 8th, 2009 in Hull City by reddevilrooney

Currently, Premier League overachievers Hull City do not own a third kit due to their lower financial budget and their absence from a European competition. They currently own a black-and-amber striped home kit and a flint away kit with amber and black trim. These have been sufficient for the Tigers to play their matches so far. The problem rose when Hull City drew with Newcastle in the FA Cup 3rd round played at the KC Stadium, necessitating a replay of the match.

Due to the presence of black or a similar colour (flint) in both the home and away kit of Hull, these clash with the famous vertically-striped white-and-black of the Toon. Hull had to borrow white shorts from Newcastle in the Premier League game at St James Park last September, but the problem with the FA Cup replay is much more serious. The club is not allowed to use either the home or away kits. Hull have called on shirt providers Umbro to find a solution, and it may come in the form of a new third shirt issue, halfway through the season. If this will be a one-off shirt or if it will remain for the rest of the season. This may depend, as suggested by fans on other forums, whether the club actually wins the match. It may also be carried forward for the coming season if the club qualifies for Europe.

Phil Brown was the person who stated this problem in public:

“We have got a massive problem – we don’t have a third-choice strip.”

“We can’t wear our home kit and we can’t wear our away. Hopefully Umbro can come up with something.”

Cambridge United had this problem last year so their kit supplier put forward an basic design in a different colour for the one match. I’m not sure why it’s such a big deal…

Uh, what happened when they played Newcastle at St. James Park in the Premier League? They wore gray, did they not?
And what’s wrong with the yellow? Is it the black stripe? Yeah, like that clashes more than gray.

The flint kit is nice but Umbro and Hull City should have thought of this before they brought it out as they knew they would have to play Newcastle this season. They should have made the kit Navy Blue in the same design then there would be no problem. Just another way of ripping fans off (again)

Phil Brown stated on KCFM (local Hull radio) that they will be wearing last seasons away kit (all white) re-badged with this seasons logos etc.

Can’t see why Hull can’t release a third strip, would be an excellent keep sake for Hull’s inaugral Premiership campaign, I for one would rush out and buy it!

why is it set in stone that newcastle wears their striped kit? don’t they have some gaudy all light blue kit as an alternate they can wear?

  10. Gervillian Swike said,

I can’t see an issue – the United and Hull kits only have the stripes in common, they’re easy to tell apart from any distance.

m4re: We have the purple away kit this year, so I’m not sure why we can’t just wear that :s
