European Football Merchandising Report 2008

Sport+Markt, one of the top international research and consultancy companies in international sports business has undertaken the project of reporting on the trends and statistics of European football merchandising by professional clubs. The company is no stranger to such research, having analysed trends on the sponsorship and advertising market for the past two decades. It joined forces with PR Marketing which has been conducting similar reports about German football for the past decade. The 80-page report was published in German and English.

It is no big news that the best clubs generate high revenues from merchandising, due to fan loyalty and successful branding. 116 European clubs were investigated, and the average revenue from merchandising and licensing was estimated at 5,300,000 Euros. Obviously, this is only an average, so it is understood that the range between the top 10 clubs and the bottom ten clubs analysed is very large. This is due to the club reputation, success and the size of the fanbase.

Nike and Adidas lead the pack of manufacturers, together combining a very powerful monopoly in the market, with a combined 80% of the market share. Statistics collected show that an average English supporter spends around 65 Euros yearly on football items that have to do with his preferred club. The collection of data was carried out in summer 2008, where more than 3500 European fans participated. The analysed 116 clubs from France, England, Germany, Italy, Spain and Holland generate an estimated total of 615 million Euros yearly from selling club-related products. The report goes deeper into the subject, and covers the following themes:
