On June 13th 2007 it was announced that Wayne Rooney would have a new squad number at Manchester United. Rooney will take over the vacant number 10 shirt, once worn by Old Trafford Legend Denis Law. Law was the hero of the Manchester club making the number his own in the 1960s.

Wayne said of his new number:
“When I was offered the chance to wear the No 10 shirt, I jumped at it, some of the game’s greatest players have become legends wearing No 10, none more so than Denis. He was crowned king of the Stretford End during his time at the club, and it is a great honour for me to wear a shirt that has such history behind it.”

does anyone else suspect that nike may have had a hand in this? it allows all sorts of Ronaldinho/Rooney R10 comparisons, in addition to selling more shirts. that said, Rooney is clearly a 10, not an 8.
rooney is one of our best players he is so good ands popular with the fans to be honest it doesnt matter what his kit looks like and what number he has on the back of it
