Real Madrid Celebrate 30th La Liga Title

Campeones 30

In the closest of finishes to a La Liga season, Real Madrid clinched their 30th Spanish league championship, topping the table courtesy of their better head to head record over Barcelona, who matched the Madrid side for points in the league and whom had a better goal difference.

For a lot of the evening it looked like Barcelona would win the title, as they were 3-0 up at half time in their game, whilst Real trailed 0-1 at home to Mallorca.

David Beckham playing his last game for the club was taken off in for Jose Antonio Reyes in the second half and the substituion had an immediate impact, with Reyes scoring with his first touch to level the scores.

In the last ten minutes Mahamadou Diarra’s header got over the goal line as the ball was saved by the Mallorca goalkeeper but bounced in off defender Basinas to give Real the lead. Then Reyes sealed the win & the title with a long range drive.

In the post match celebrations the team wore next season’s 2007/08 home shirts with “Campeones 30″ on the back. The shirts are those that were previewed here recently and feature the same bwin logo as seen when the sponsorship deal was announced.

Real Forward Ruud van Nistelrooy who had to go off after 33 minutes said:

“It is a dream come true. It is incredible. It is hard to explain the joy that I feel. I don’t have the words, I don’t even feel any pain. We’re champions and the tear doesn’t even hurt. All we have left to do is go to the party.”
