2009 Santos Home and Away Shirts
Brazilian club from Sao Paolo, Santos FC, have unveiled their new shirts for the 2009 campaign. The team plays in the top tier of Brazilian football, the Serie A. In the 2008 season, they finished in the 15th place, and now they are targetting a much better position in the table. The last time they were crowned Champions was in 2004. The glory years of the Brazilian club were 1962 and 1963, when they won the Copa Libertadores as well as the Intercontinental Cup (nowadays Club World Cup) in both years. At the time, all-time legends Pele’, Coutinho and Pepe played for the club.
The kits for Santos are manufactured by English brand Umbro, a subsidiary of American sportwear titans Nike. Semp Toshiba is the main sponsor of the Santos shirts, while Universo have their logo on the sleeves. The Semp Toshiba logo used on the home shirt is distinct from that on the away shirt, the former being much larger. The home shirt is all white. It has a black Umbro logo on the right side of the chest, the club crest on the opposite side, a large black STi in the middle, with red text ‘Semp Toshiba’ below it, with the player number underneath. The away shirt is vertically striped in white and black, and only has the Semp Toshiba text in red on a white background, with the player number underneath.

The striped one isn’t too bad but they need to tone the top one down a bit.

How crammed can a shirt be, the sponsor is HUGE! It’s got sponsors all over the shirt. On the arms, on the front, a huge number on the front, it’s weird.

real ugly. present shirts of Pelé’s beloved team are real better than that. Umbro has beautiful templates, but they abused on not exploring better the clean design that Santos colors implies. this huge horrible sponsor logos end up getting shirts even worst.

It is only a matter of time before English shirts look like this. Championships sides already have 3 sponsors.
If fans boycotted this shirt, but it lead to a re-think, or is sponsorship money so big that it doesn’t matter if the club sold no shirts.
This is likely to be the 1st season I haven’t bought the Chelsea shirt. 2 reason 1> the new shirt is very ugly and 2> Chelsea now change all 3 of their kits yearly.
I can’t read the sponsor on the top one…what does that say? Maybe it needs to be bigger.

I had no idea Santos had a tour de france team. Sponsor creep is a lost cause in “third world leagues,” that includes the championship. The premiership is probably the only top League that hasn’t allow secondary sponsors but God only knows what would happen if television revenue went away.
