2009 A-League Kits Previewed

Posted on February 17th, 2009 in Australia by luckyliam10

The Hyundai A-League was created in 2004 and began in the Australian summer of 2005 with 8 teams. The competition has been running for four seasons and has steadily grown in size and skill with two new teams entering the fold in 2009/10.

In 2004 The Football Federation of Australia signed a deal with Reebok which gifted them the exclusive rights to create all 8 home and away kits for the first 5 seasons of the competition. This deal gave Reebok full control over the home kits in which a terrible pattern formed the company created 8 shirts on the same basic template.

The FFA made another poor decision when they created a ridiculous policy that stated that white shirts must be worn by the away team in every match which resulted in another 8 shirts on the same basic template all in white.

The good news is that with 2 years to go on the shirt contract Reebok have decided to let the clubs change their home shirts and the FFA have abolished the white away shirt rule which all makes for some interesting looking kits in season 2009/10.

Below are pictures designed by a mock shirt artist (besides Central Coast) they give a guide as to what he he thinks the A-League shirts will look like for the new season, some are more of a stretch of the imagination that others.

Central Coast Mariners

The Central Coast Mariners are the only A-League team to have officially announced their shirts for the 2009/10 season the remainder are likely to come in the next few months. The home shirt as you can see is yellow in colour with black trimmings and a vertical stripe with the away shirt appearing plain yellow.

Sydney FC

The ‘Glamour’ club of the A-League has failed to live up to early expectations and enters season 5 with their fifth coach. The club is reported to be looking for a much simpler sky blue home shirt design something like this:

Wellington Phoenix

The only team from outside Australia to play in the A-League much to the dismay of the Asian Confederation. The old home shirt of the Phoenix was voted the best home shirt in the A-League with the new shirt to rise eyebrows, a yellow and black vertical striped design put together excellently by a mock up artist.

Adelaide shirts are spectacular. Love the argyle.

  6. Liam said,

    not a decent kit there!

  7. terry said,

Hideous. And I also notice that, when it comes to choosing kit colours……Don’t ask an Australian! And shame on Reebok! Every year all the tops are disgusting!

  8. stevey said,

the only real kit is the first picture the rest are all fake.

  9. paul tomlinson said,

what a diabolical selection…tacky and tasteless

  11. cory j said,

the adelaide and central coast kits are pretty classy. i’d like to see the MLS go with something simple like either of those.

  12. Peter said,

Impressive all of them. Very happy if the Perth one is anything like it.

  13. Watford Boy said,

    ok not that exellent

  14. tigerpete said,

Perth is the overwhelming best shirt. Sydney’s and Wellington’s are decent aswell – the rest are either boring or tacky

  15. swji said,

I quite like the Central Coast home shirt. Retro look to it.

Are these available in the UK?

  16. MVFC 05 said,

Perth Glory very nice, Gold Coast rubbish, Queensland very classy, Adelaide distinguished look, Central Coast bland, Wellington busy, Fury retro, Sydney like the team pathetic, Newcastle confusing & Melbourne Vintage!

  17. Dale said,

I like them honestly. Anything’s better than the rubbish they wear now. I particularly like Adelaide and Melbourne. With Canberra and Wollongong coming into the comp, I’d say the away jerseys are gonna get a workout – Canberra green and Wollongong red/white.

  18. Dan said,

I don’t think you can call this a preview. With the exception of the Central Coast Mariners shirt, they all look like they’ve all been done in 5 minutes on photoshop.

  19. Stu Lockwood said,

All pretty shoddy, but will God care that he looks like he’s playing for Nigeria so long as he’s rattling them in with his lethal left peg?

  20. Jason said,

That is NOT the OFFICIAL 2009/10 Central Coast kit… that is the 2009 Asian Champions League kit which will NOT be carried over to the next season of the A-League.

  21. Jason said,

and it’s not black trimmings…. it’s navy blue.

  22. Jamal Johnson said,

Wellington kit is nice, sydneys looks the same…actully they are all rubbish get rid of REEBOK we are sick of these stupid generic jerseys….and what the hell is that Newcastle kit about!!!

  23. bob said,

Perth glory are a laughing stock of the a-league now stfu

  24. Mark said,

Being a victory fan, im going to by the new kit, but its not very good. I was hoping they would jazz it up a little

  25. Jake said,

All of these look ok when i first heard fury’s colours are green and white, the kit up there is wat i thought would look best and it does! its not to overboard, its plain but it looks very good and with the sponsers and all that it will look the best. Adelaide’s is also a good idea, although get rid of the blue sleeves (They are the Reds arnt they), Gold coast’s is patheic and should go for stripes and Queenslands is pathetic lets hope they dont go ahead, sydneys old kit was perfect!! leave it the way it was. And lets hope the phoenix get their stripes!!! But i gotta say Perth’s jersey is looking a lot better and as a melbourne fan i think a sleeker ‘V’ is pointless and dosnt even look like a V and wen worn will almost look like a horizontal line!, they should just make the ‘V’ thiner.

  26. Scott said,

Does anybody know the official launch date?

  27. doug said,

this should be queensland roars strip for next season

  28. doug said,

  29. Max said,

Look, I think we are giving these kits too much stick.

For me, the kits for all the teams last season were rubbish.
Even in the PL, simple=good. If you stick to a simple jersey you can still make it appealing, while not ******** it up.

To be perfectly honest, I like the look of all these jerseys very much. Especially NQ, it looks like a nice jersey.

Whether these will be the actual jerseys remains to be seen, but given last years horrors in terms of jerseys, I’m very impressed with this range.

  30. Perinho said,

Finally a Perth kit I will want to buy. Hoping for a retro orange away kit like barca’s 3rd kits a couple of years ago. Light blue clubs look terrible. Also, has there been any thought of a-league arm patches, like in EPL or Champs league, as opposed to their logo on the chest of the jersey?

  31. Perinho said,

Also, perth have a new logo now, a proper one, not just the word glory tizzed up a bit.

  32. Matthew said,

Adelaide needs to incorporate more State Colors into the home shirt. Red, Yellow and Blue. They could design something better than that.

  33. David said,

So, I’m a AUFC fan. I like our new styles. I think i will buy one, then go golfing.

  34. Harry said,

Thesekits are bogus! there are better ones on diff website!
