San Jose Earthquakes are based in California and currently play in the Major League Soccer. They are popularly known as the Quakes, the Earthquakes and The Boys in Blue. Their traditional colour is blue, and their kits are manufactured by sportswear company adidas. These are the new shirts that the Quakes will use for the 2008 Major League Soccer season, on their return to this competition after taking some time away from it.

San Jose Earthquakes home & away kits

The home kit has black as its base colour. The sides of the collar are blue, but the actual collar is black. The stripes on the sleeves, typical of adidas-designed shirts, are white. The adidas logo appears in the centre below the collar, in white. No outside firm sponsors the kits for San Jose Earthquakes. In the central part, normally used for the logo of the shirt sponsors, the home kit has ‘San Jose’, in white. Extending from the underarm down the sides of the shirt there’s a blue stripe, which halts just before the bottom of the shirt. This is divided from the central part of the shirt by a very thin white line that goes down to the bottom of the shirt.

The same layout was used by adidas to design the Quakes’ away shirt. The base colour used is white, with the collar and stripes being black. On the sides of the collar, there are some details in blue. The adidas logo appears in black in the centre, below the collar. The “shirt sponsor” logo used for the away shirt is not the same as the home shirt. As the club is not sponsored by another firm, the board decided to put ‘San Jose’ on the home shirt, whilst putting ‘Earthquakes’ (in blue font colour) on the away kit. The side details of the shirt are in blue, and are basically the same as the home kit. The dividing thin line on the away kits is black.

Why are all the MLS kits made by adidas?

  2. Bertie said,

and why do they all seem to have exactly the same template on both the home and away kits?

Because Adidas is a sponsor and MLS has a shirt deal with them. That’s why.

What a name for a team. The Earthquakes, it sounds like a rugby team. It should have a football team name, as goes for all MLS clubs.

‘earthquakes’ kind of suits a team based in a major earthquake zone, in my opinion.

  7. Cathal said,

Yes, it might but that is not a proper football team name. It should be for example San Jose F.C or some good name.

their name dates back before the MLS existed, but Nike suggested they make change it to the San Jose Clash… then they changed it back to San Jose Earthquakes before moving to Houston to become the Dynamo. This team is really an expansion team.

I like what Toronto FC did. They chose that name so that the mascot or team nickname could come about organically by the team’s supporters.
