The second edition of the European Championships was held in Spain in 1964. Just like the previous tournament, only four teams participated, and these were Denmark, Hungary, USSR and hosts Spain. These teams qualified from a home-and-away knockout qualifying stage, after which the hosting of the competition was given to Spain. The final rounds of the competition were played between the 17th June and the 21st June. Four games were played, being two semi-finals, the third-place playoff and the Final. The Santiago Bernabeu stadium (Real Madrid) and the Nou Camp (Barcelona) were the venues used for Euro 1964.

The first semi-final was played on the 17th June at the Santiago Bernabeu. Hosting country Spain had to face the Hungarian team. The attendance for this game was 34713 fans, most of which were home fans. Spain opened the scoring first, through Jesus Maria Pereda in the 35th minute. Hungary left it late to equalise in the 84th minute, with Ferenc Bene the goal scorer. Until the 90th minute, the score was still level at 1-1. Extra time had to be played. To the delight of the Spanish supporters, Amancio Amaro scored in the 115th minute, putting Spain directly into the Final.

The second semi-final was played later on the same day, and started after the Spain vs Hungary match was complete. Denmark had to play the USSR in the Nou Camp. The score line of 3-0 indicates that the match was dominated by the Russians. USSR scored through Valeri Voronin (17th), Viktor Ponedelnik (40th) and Valentin Ivanov (87th). This meant that the USSR would accompany and face Spain in the Final match of the tournament.

Extra time had to be played, in which Hungary managed to score twice through Dezso Novak. Thus, Hungary ranked third, while the Danish had to content with fourth.

The Final of Euro 1964 was held in a jam-packed Santiago Bernabeu Stadium (79115 supporters) on the 21st June between Spain and USSR. The score line was opened very early in the game by Spanish player Jesus Maria Pereda in the 6th minute. However, it took the USSR just two minutes to equalise through Galimzyan Khusainov. When it looked like extra time would be needed to decide this match, Spain scored a goal in the 84th minute through Marcelino; a goal which meant that Spain were crowned champions. This was the first title that Spain won, and as yet, their only achievement in a European Championship.
