Euro 1960 in France
The first European Championship to be held was the 1960 event, which was held in France between the 6th July and the 10th July. Four teams took part in the finals of the tournament. The teams qualified on a knockout home-and-away basis for the finals of the tournament. The teams that made it to the Finals were the USSR, Yugoslavia, France and Czechoslovakia. The two venues that were used for the tournament were the Stade Velodrome in Marseille and the Parc des Princes in Paris.
Finals of Euro 1960
The first semi-final was played on the 6th July in Paris between France and Yugoslavia. There were a total of 9 goals scored in this match, with Yugoslavia finally managing to win a tight match with the score of 5-4. The second semi-final started in Marseille half an hour later than the previous semi-final, between Czechoslovakia and USSR. It was a game dominated totally by USSR, which won the game 3-0. The third-place playoff played between the losers of the semi-final stage took place on the 9th July in Marseille. Czechoslovakia managed to beat hosts France with the score line of 2-0.

The Final of Euro 1960 was played in Parc des Princes (with an attendance of nearly 18000 fans) between the USSR and Yugoslavia, on the 10th July 1960. Yugoslavia scored first before halftime through Milan Galic in the 43rd minute. Soon after halftime, the USSR equalised through Slava Metreveli in the 49th minute. Until the 90th minute, the game was still level at 1-1, with the need for extra time to be played. It was the USSR that scored in the extra time, in the 113rd minute, through Viktor Ponedelnik. This meant that the USSR were crowned the winners of this first edition of the European Championships, winning their first ever title.
