Irish defender Richard Patrick Dunne is one of the most respected and consistent defenders in the English Premier League. Currently wearing the number five shirt for Villa, Dunne spent nearly a decade at Manchester City before joining The Lions in 2009.
Dunne's development years were spent at Everton after he left Dublin at the age of 15 to join the English Club. He made 60 appearances for The Toffees before joining Manchester City for £3 million in the autumn of 2000. Dunne quickly established himself in the centre back position and helped the side win promotion to the top division. Dunne received the Manchester City Player of the Year Award four years in a row between 2005 and 2008, the first City player to do so.
In August 2009 after a major reshuffle at City, Dunne joined Aston Villa signing a four year contract. He made his debut for the side in a 1-0 win over Birmingham City and scored his first goal for his new club on the 5th October 2009 against his former club, Manchester City.
The large defender is renowned for his great aerial ability and this has been used to help his native Ireland in international fixtures. Dunne made his debut for the Republic of Ireland on the 26th April 2000 aged just twenty years old. He has scored on eight occasions for his country and helped them qualify for Euro 2012 in what he described as the best experience he has had in football.
