Jermain Defoe is a centre forward who is currently in his second spell with Tottenham Hotspur despite beginning his youth career at Charlton Athletic. At the age of 16, Defoe controversially moved to West Ham which in turn saw Charlton awarded £1.4 million in compensation. His first taste of first team action came on loan at AFC Bournemouth in the 2000/01 season. Defoe had a terrific time at the club scoring 19 goals in 29 appearances before his return to the Hammers. The following season he became West Ham's top goalscorer despite being used mainly from the substitute bench. He scored a further 11 league goals during the next campaign but West Ham were relegated.
Less than 24 hours after their relegation, Defoe handed in a transfer request. The proposal was rejected and the striker came in for criticism from supporters and the club for the ill timing. Nevertheless, after a drop in form, the Hammers accepted an initial £6 million offer from Tottenham for the striker in January 2004. He managed to score on seven occasions in the second half of the 2004 season before only managing nine in a frustrating rotation season the following year. The 2006/07 campaign saw Defoe involved much more regularly and he notched 18 goals in 49 league and cup appearances. However, the 07/08 campaign saw Defoe behind new signing Darren Bent in the pecking order. In January 2008, the striker moved to Portsmouth for £6 million to be reunited with former manager Harry Redknapp. In his one year at Pompey he managed 14 goals in 30 matches. However, in January 2009, he returned to White Hart Lane shortly after Harry Redknapp's appointment at the London club.
The prolific striker's return to Spurs did not come cheap as the club paid out around £16 million for his services. In his second spell with the team, Defoe's goal ratio has been very impressive with 16 goals in 21 league matches. This included a fantastic five goal haul in the 9-1 victory over Wigan. Despite his goal scoring style in the league, Defoe's international career has been extremely stop start. During the 2004 European qualifying and 2006 World Cup qualifying campaigns, the striker played his part but was overlooked on both occasions for the final tournament squad. Under Fabio Capello, Defoe has cemented himself as a squad regular who has the tendency to score goals when introduced. This role is likely to have booked him a place on the plane to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.
