The Cypriot national football team currently occupy position 63 in the Fifa world rankings. Their highest ever position was 57. Their first international match was played in Tel-Aviv in 1949 where they were defeated 3-1 by Israel.
Their first competitive win came against Switzerland in February 1968. This was a European Championship qualifier. Cyprus have never reached a major footballing tournament however in recent years their results have been improving considerably. They missed out on qualification to Euro 2000 by one point and defeated both Spain and Israel en route.
In the Euro 2008 qualifiers, Cyprus defeated Republic of Ireland 5-2 in Nicosia thanks to two goals from all time top scorer Michalis Konstantinou. Cyprus wear a royal blue home strip with a yellow trim on the shoulders. The away strip is all white with the same yellow trim.
They moved into their new stadium in Nicosia in 1999 which holds 22,859 supporters. The stadium is named GSP Stadium. Their biggest win came over Andorra in 2000 when they were 5-0 victors.
Although none of the current team play in major European leagues, they are improving considerably as a footballing nation and it would not surprise me to see some of their players playing in the Premier League in the near future.
