Carlos Cuellar is a defender who began his career at a fourth level Spanish club called CD Calahorra in 2000. He moved up to the second level of Spanish football in 2001 with CD Numancia. He spent two seasons at the club before some impressive performances earned him a move to La Liga with Osasuna in 2003. Cuellar became a key part of the side that reached the final of the Copa Del Rey in 2005 and that finished 4th in the 2006 season. This league position ensured UEFA Champions League football for the following year. Nevertheless, Osasuna dropped down to the UEFA Cup and Cuellar played seven times in the competition.
In June 2007, Rangers brought Cuellar for £2.3 million on a four year deal. His early form was rewarded with the August Player of the Month award in Scotland. Cuellar continued to play well for Rangers but a low point in his career came in an Old Firm Derby against Celtic where he was sent off for handball. As a result, Rangers lost the match and it led to them eventually handing the title to Celtic. Even so, Cuellar collected the Player of the Year award for the SPL along with being named Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year.
Cuellares career with Rangers did not last any longer unfortunately as the defender was brought by Aston Villa for £7.8 million after triggering a release clause in his Rangers contract. He was given the number 24 shirt and made his debut in the UEFA Cup against Litex Lovech. Despite this, Cuellar spent the majority of his first season with Villa as a right back due to the good form of Martin Laursen and Curtis Davies. However, Laursenes retirement has seen Cuellar become a regular at centre back during the 2009/10 season so far.
