Cruz Azul Football

Cruz Azul were founded as an amateur team on 22nd May 1927 by the workers of the La Cruz Azul S.A. cement company in the town of Jasso, Hidalgo, Mexico. They often played for Hidalgo in Mexican amateur tournaments. The Cruz Azul team wear a football kit of blue shirts, white shorts and socks. The away strip is white shirts and socks with blue shorts.

The amateur team played many times in Mexico City, against the reserve squads of professional teams, but in 1960 the new owners of the cement company decided to register the team for the Segunda Division. In 1964 the team won that league and were promoted to Mexico's top flight.

In their first season they finished 8th and just four years later they won their first Mexican League Championship. In the 1970's Cruz Azul were Mexico's most successful team winning the league six times, getting them the nickname La Maquina. In their first appearance in the Copa Libertadores Cruz Azul made the final only losing on penalties after the two legs were a draw on aggregate.
