Cork City Football
Cork City F.C. is an Irish Football club playing in the Football League of Ireland. The club was founded and elected to the league in 1984 to continue the tradition of Association Football in Cork, its traditional colours are green and white with red trim. It was one of the first football teams in Ireland founded, to field professional footballers and certainly the first in Cork.
With the development of Turner.s Cross Stadium and progression in professionalism at the club, Cork City F.C. has seen numerous increase in fan base and following in recent years. Former Chelsea and Cork Celtic hero Bobby Tambling was the first manager appointed to the club.In its first and second seasons, the club avoided relegation only on goal difference as they did not even win a single game.
In 1986 the club moved to Turner.s Cross and new manager Noel O.Mahony brought Cork to a mid-table finish. Cork City.s performances kept on getting better and when former Ireland striker Eamon O.Keefe took control of the club, he achieved great success. In fact he won the Munster Cup together with the FAI League Cup (the club.s first national silverware).
Cork City.s most memorable moment definitely comes in the early 90s when they were paired with German Giants Bayern Munich in a Uefa Cup tie. At Musgrave Park, the Irish hopefuls held Bayern to a 1-1 draw. However, in Bavaria, the Germans scored two late goals to advance through.
They managed to land the first Premier Division title in 1993. The 1993/1994 then saw them beating Welsh outfit Cwmbran Town in the Uefa Champions League, getting rewarded with a trip to Istanbul to Turkish Giants Galatarasay. They lost both home and away.
City have won the Munster Cup for 9 consecutive seasons. They won the League of Ireland lately in 2005 and won the FAI Cup in 2007. Pat Morley and John Caulfield are joint all-time top scorers for the club having scored 129 goals. Phil Harrington is top goalkeeper who has kept the most cleansheets for the club having 112 clean sheets to his tally.
