The Football League Championship is England's second highest football division. It was founded in 2004 and was known as the Football League Championship. Teams get promoted to England's Premiership division while those who take the fall find themselves in England's League One.
Twenty-four teams take part in the league and the 2007/8 participating teams were: Barnsley, Blackpool, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Colchester United, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Norwich City, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Scunthorpe United, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Stoke City, Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In 2004-5 season, the Championship was considered to be the richest non-top flight football division in the world and the sixth richest division in Europe. From the start of the Football League Championship in 2004, Sunderland have won it twice in 04/05 and 06/07 while Reading won the title in 05/06 season.
