Michael Carrick is a central midfielder who currently plays for Manchester United after coming through the famous West Ham United academy. He made his debut for the senior West Ham team in August 1999 as a substitute during the 3-0 victory over Bradford. However, he was shipped out to Swindon and Birmingham on loan for several months to get experience. The midfielder made his big breakthrough during the 2000/01 campaign as a series of fine performances saw Carrick nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year. The following season saw him continue as a regular before an injury plagued 2002/03 season combined with West Ham's relegation. Carrick decided to stay with the club during 03/04 First Division season. However, the club's failure to gain promotion saw Carrick leave at the end of the campaign.
Tottenham was the midfielder's next destination as the North London club paid a mere £2.75 million for his services. The next two seasons were highly successful for Carrick as he played a major part in the club's race to finish in 4th place during 2006. However, the team could only finish in 5th place which cost Tottenham Champions League football. Carrick's performances saw him linked with a host of larger clubs and eventually he made the biggest move of his career to Manchester United.
The midfielder was purchased for £18.6 million and made his United debut in August 2006. He started the majority of games during that season and scored his first goal for the club in January 2007 in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. Carrick's arrival signalled the start of United's three title winning seasons with the midfielder picking up Championship medals in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He also played the full 120 minutes and scored a penalty in the Champions League final victory against Chelsea. The midfielder has started the 09/10 campaign slightly below par but has recently shown signs of getting back to his best form.
