Also known the Brasileirão, the Campeonato Brasileiro is the name for the Brazilian football leagues. The league was established in 1971 to replace the previous national competitions known as The Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa and The Taça Brasil. The leagues are broken down into three divisions, Série A, Série B and Série C.
The national league has only been in existance since 1971 due to the sheer size of Brazil, prior this Brazilian club football revolved around the state leagues, with those of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states being the most important.
