The Basque region is situated in both France and Spain. The region is divided into 7 states, four belonging to Spain and three to France. The Basque country has a population of slightly more than 3 million (2006 statistics) and has long been struggling to gain independence and be considered a free nation-state, unsuccessfully until the present day. The largest city is Bilbao, home of Spanish La Liga club Athletic Club.
In football terms, the country is not considered as independent, and is not an affiliate of FIFA or UEFA. Players from the region may choose to play for either Spain or France, according to their state of origin, in international competitions. The only games that the Basque national team plays are friendly matches. The Basque country has played several friendly matches against sides from all continents, but never attracted a huge football nation.
Some notable players that originated from the Basque region are Bixente Lizarazu (France); Xabi Alonso, Mikel Arteta, Asier Del Horno, Ivan Campo, Gaizka Mendieta and Francisco Yeste (all Spain). It is truly a pity that with the vast talent emerging from the Basque region, players are not allowed to represent their Basque country-of-origin in international competitions. Maybe someday in the future, it will be the appropriate time for all Basque citizens to gain independence and be considered a nation-state with its own FIFA-affiliated and UEFA-affiliated football team that can play in national competitions.
