Julio Baptista is an attacking midfielder/striker who currently plays for Italian club Roma. Nicknamed 'The Beast' due to his impressive physique, Baptista actually began his career as a defensive midfielder at Brazilian club Sao Paulo. He played 138 times for the club between 2000-2003 scoring 22 times in the process. Spanish club Sevilla noticed his ability and purchased him in the summer of 2003 for £1.75 million. The club decided to transform him into an attacking midfielder and the switch soon paid dividends. During his two years with the team, he scored 50 goals in all competitions from just 81 appearances.
Inevitably, several of Europe 's biggest clubs stated their interest in Baptista during the 2005 summer transfer window. In July 2005, the Brazilian moved to Real Madrid on a five year contract for £13.8 million. Nevertheless, The Beast was played on the left winger for the majority of the season and only scored eight goals in a largely disappointing campaign. In August 2006, Baptista moved to Arsenal on a season long loan in exchange for Jose Reyes. The player struggled at Arsenal with only three goals in 24 Premiership appearances. He shone in the League Cup but wasn 't considered impressive enough to turn the loan into a permenant signing. Upon his return to Madrid, he was played in his favoured attacking midfield role and impressed many onlookers. However, a poor run towards the end of the season saw him lose his place again. In August 2008, Baptista made a £7.1 million move to Roma. The striker has been in and out of Roma 's team and has managed to score nine goals in 29 appearances at present.
Despite a relatively shaky domestic career, the midfielder has been capped 43 times by Brazil in an eight year period. His first cap came in 2001 during a 0-0 draw against Japan in the Confederations Cup. Poor form for Real Madrid saw him miss out on the 2006 World Cup squad. However, he is in contention to make the 2010 squad for South Africa. At the same time, he will have to have a good season for Roma to ensure that some up and coming players don 't take his place.
