Arbroath Football

Arbroath Football Club was founded in 1878. Currently they play in the Scottish Third Division and are managed by former Scottish midfielder John McGlashan. The team's performances and successes have fluctuated a lot in recent year, with the team being in the First Division at one point and at the bottom of Third Division at another point. Their biggest success was being able to survive in First Division in 2001/02 where they gained 48 points in 36 matches, ranking in 7th place in a 10-team league. However in 2002/03, Arbroath's performances went from bad to worse, and they got 15 points from 36 matches, ranking last and being relegated to Second Division.

Very interesting is the fact that Arbroath hold the record of the biggest victory in a senior football match, after they beat Bon Accord in a Scottish Cup match by an extraordinary 36 goal to nil. The match was played on the 12th September 1885, so no Arbroath fan can say that he remembers such victory.

Traditionally, they play in a maroon home strip. Their nicknames are The Red Lichties (coming from the red light that guided fishing boats back to harbour) and the Smokies. Arbroath's home stadium is Gayfield Park which has a capacity of 4145 fans. The grass-surfaced stadium was opened in 1925. Last season's average attendance was 730 supporters, which is understandable given that the club plays in the fourth level of Scottish football. The team's biggest rivals are Montrose FC, which currently sit just above Arbroath in the 2007/08 table. As the campaign is in its very final stage, Arbroath currently sit in 4th place in the section of the league where they qualify for the play-offs for promotion to the Second Division.
