AIK Stockholm Football
Swedish club AIK Stockholm is based in the city of Solna, in the north of capital city Stockholm. The club was founded in 1891 by Isidor Behrens, as a public club for the general public where the main activity was to be athletics. The football department of the club was founded 5 years later in 1896. Today, the team plays in the highest division of Swedish football, the Allsvenskan. They have been crowned Swedish champions 10 times, and they have won the Allsvenskan on 4 occasions.
Currently they are managed by Swedish manager Rikard Norling, captained by Swedish midfielder Daniel Tjernstrom, and play their home games in the Rasunda Stadium. AIK enjoy one of the biggest fan-bases in Sweden and had average attendances of 20 thousand supporters per match last season.
Stockholm.s biggest local rivals are Hammarby and Djurgarden. Matches against these teams, especially the latter, attract huge interest in the country and even abroad, with stadium turnouts being particularly high, nearly filling up 36000-capacity Rasunda Stadium. Another Swedish rival is Gothenburg-based club IFK Goteborg, which has been crowned Swedish champions 18 times and provide the biggest threat to Stockholm.s push for success. Goteborg are the current holders of the Allsvenskan 2007, while AIK ranked 5th. Over 79 seasons in the Allsvenskan, (until 14 April 2008) AIK have gained 2748 points from 1827 matches, winning 754, losing 587 and drawing 486.
The 2008 Allsvenskan season has just kicked off, with the first match being played on the 30th March. It is thus difficult to analyse how AIK will perform this season. Until the fourth round, AIK have won once, drawn twice and lost once, therefore at this stage it is difficult to predict what direction AIK Stockholm will take in the 2008 campaign.
